The southwest is the most sophisticated corner of the island. Port d’Andratx is the epitome of a stylish Mallorca holiday: yachts, designer villas, restaurants right on the waterfront. Anyone renting a villa here pays premium prices – but also gets the best sunsets on the island and short distances to Palma's old town.
Around the natural harbour, Michelin-starred restaurants line up, such as the Gran Folies, classic favourites such as Restaurant Miramar or the trendy beach club Gran Folies Beach Club. Anyone having breakfast by their villa's pool in the morning can reach the harbour on foot in ten minutes by midday, and relax on a terrace with sea views in the evening. The hills above – Cala Llamp, Mont Port, La Mola – are densely populated with modern villas, often featuring infinity pools facing west.
A few kilometres further east lie Santa Ponsa and Camp de Mar – similarly well-maintained, but with sandy beaches instead of a rocky coastline, making them more family-friendly. Those wanting to dine or shop in Palma in the evening can reach the cathedral ring road from there in 25 minutes.
The Serra de Tramuntana stretches along the west coast and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. Anyone renting a villa in Deià, Valldemossa or Sóller stays between olive groves and steep cliffs – ideal for hikers, gourmets and anyone looking for a quieter, culturally rich Mallorca holiday.
Deià was the retreat of Robert Graves for decades and remains a magnet for artists, gallery owners and musicians to this day. Valldemossa lives on the legacy of Chopin and George Sand; Sóller combines an Art Nouveau town centre with one of Europe's most beautiful railway lines – the historic Tren de Sóller. Important to know: The Tramuntana is not a beach destination. If you want to go swimming, head to Cala Deià, to Cala Tuent or as far as Sa Calobra – always combined with winding mountain roads. In return, the region rewards you with dramatic sunsets over the sea and a peace and quiet that is hard to find in the southwest.
Along the cliff coast lie tiny fishing coves like Cala Banyalbufar, Port des Canonge or Port de Valldemossa. Here, classic Llaüts, traditional wooden fishing boats under thatched roofs, still anchor. Anyone renting a villa in this corner enjoys breakfast with a view of a backdrop that has hardly changed in a hundred years – no hotel complex, no beach club, just rocks, pine trees and sea.
Practical tip: In summer, access roads to many Tramuntana coves are closed to cars during the day. An early start (before 9 am) or arriving by public bus from Valldemossa or Banyalbufar saves searching for a parking space.
Unlike the long sandy beaches in the north, the coastline in the southwest is characterized by rocks, small coves and natural bathing jetties. The water here is often particularly clear – a bonus for anyone who wants to snorkel or simply jump into the sea before breakfast.
Classics for a day of swimming are the Cala Llamp directly below Port d’Andratx, the Cala Marmacén or the rocky Cala Fornells near Peguera. Many villas feature a direct path to the water or their own sundowner spot above the cliffs. Those who need sand and shallow entry – for example with small children – are better off in the north around Alcúdia and Playa de Muro; the rocky coast rewards you instead with privacy and deep water right at the access point.

A few practical insights: A west-facing pool gets the longest afternoon and evening sun, making it the classic choice for relaxed sundowners. East-facing pools warm up faster in the morning – lovely for early swimmers, but already in the shade from 4 pm in peak summer. Pool heating becomes a crucial comfort factor in the low season (April, May, October); during the summer months of July and August it hardly plays a role, as the water reaches 26–28 °C anyway.
Just as important as the pool itself are the surrounding areas: covered pergolas for midday shade, an outdoor shower area, teak sun loungers instead of scorching plastic – and ideally an outdoor kitchen with grill and sink so you don't have to run into the house for every glass of water.
A final thought on the location: Villas directly on the bay of Port d’Andratx or Camp de Mar have the unbeatable advantage that the maritime activity is part of the backdrop – yachts arrive, sailors anchor for the night, the lighthouse begins to flash. Those who prefer it even quieter choose a villa one ridge higher up: same view, less hustle and bustle, and usually a significantly better value per bedroom.
